My own Worldpackers experience

I’m not just passing along a code: I’ve volunteered through Worldpackers myself. My first one was in Italy, during a two-month trip around the country: three weeks in Arezzo, Tuscany, with free accommodation in exchange for a few hours of help a day. Later I did a second Worldpackers stay in Italy.
What I brought home was worth much more than the money saved. I had been learning Italian on my own for two years with apps and online resources. Three weeks living with Italians did more for my fluency than those two years. That’s why I recommend it to anyone who wants to travel on a budget, and especially to anyone learning a language.
Worldpackers in numbers
- 8.3+ million travelers and hosts in the community

- 97% of members who send 3 applications get a reply
- Trustpilot: 4.4 stars (697 reviews)
- Reclame Aqui (Brazil): 5.9/10, rated "Poor" (Mar to Aug 2026), 100% of complaints answered
What is Worldpackers?

Worldpackers is a platform that connects travelers with hosts (hostels, guesthouses, NGOs, farms, eco-projects and families) who offer free accommodation in exchange for part-time volunteer work. Many positions also include meals or other perks, which are listed on each host’s page.
Typical tasks include hostel reception, housekeeping, social media, teaching languages, helping on organic farms or supporting community projects. Hours, days off and minimum stay are set by each host.
How it works
- Create a free account and fill in your profile: photo, languages, skills and a short introduction.
- Browse positions by country, type of work and dates. You can save favorites and read reviews from previous volunteers.
- Become a verified member with the annual plan. This is what lets you apply to positions and message hosts.
- Apply with a personal message that shows why you are a good fit for that specific place.
- Confirm the details on the platform (dates, hours, what is included) before you travel.
Pros
- Huge savings on accommodation, often the biggest cost of long trips.
- Real cultural immersion: you live with locals and other travelers instead of staying in tourist bubbles.
- Language practice every day, which is one of the fastest ways to learn a language.
- Reviews on every host, so you can see what other volunteers experienced.
- One membership, unlimited applications for a whole year.
Cons
- It is not a free vacation. You will work a few hours most days.
- Popular positions are competitive, especially in high season. A strong profile matters.
- Quality varies between hosts. Reading reviews and asking questions before you go is essential.
- The membership is paid, so it pays off mostly for trips of a few weeks or more.
Tips to get accepted
Don’t get discouraged by rejections: I had several applications declined or ignored before getting accepted. It’s part of the process.
- Complete your profile with a friendly photo and concrete skills (“I can manage Instagram accounts”, “I have reception experience”).
- Personalize every message. Mention something specific from the listing.
- Be flexible with dates and consider the low season.
- Start with well-reviewed hosts to make your first experience easier.
Is Worldpackers safe?
Short version below; the long one, with the most common complaints and red flags, is in Is Worldpackers legit?
Hosts are reviewed by volunteers and the platform keeps your agreements in writing. As with any travel, do your homework: read recent reviews, talk to the host before arriving, share your plans with someone you trust and keep a backup budget.
